Can the drop be shortened?
Yes, it is set at installation. That makes it as workable over a dining table under a standard ceiling as it is in a tall stairwell.
Where does a long drop pay off?
A stairwell, a double height entry or over a table in a room with high ceilings. Anywhere the space above head height would otherwise sit empty.
Does the sphere glare?
The ribbed shade diffuses the source, so you see a lit sphere rather than a bulb. That is what lets it hang comfortably at eye level in a stairwell.
Can I hang two at different heights?
In a stairwell that is the best way to use them. Staggered drops follow the line of the stairs and give the void real depth.
How do I clean something hung that low?
That is one advantage of the long drop. A soft dry cloth around the ribs, reachable from a step ladder in most rooms, once or twice a year.
