Is it too plain for a dining room?
It is deliberately quiet, and at over thirty three inches across it still commands the space. In a room with a lot going on, this is the fixture that calms it down instead of competing.
Where does the light go?
Up into the bowl and back out across the ceiling, plus a soft glow through the stone itself. That bounced light is what makes a room feel evenly lit rather than spotlit.
How low does it hang?
Shallow, which is the point. Over a table, thirty to thirty four inches of clearance is right. In an entry, hang it higher and the bowl still reads clearly from below.
Does it work with a low ceiling?
Better than most fixtures this wide, because the depth is minimal. Eight foot ceilings are fine over a table where nobody walks directly underneath.
Does dust collect inside the bowl?
A little over a year, as with any upward facing shade. A dry soft cloth around the inside once a year clears it and the glow comes straight back.
